Description‌

The GDI research cluster brings together academics with a shared interest in developing gender-focused research across disciplines with the goal of contributing to international scholarship and public discourse in cultural, social and political domains. Building on an RSF seed grant in 2010, the GDI has already had a demonstrable, positive impact on research activity and outputs including, at NUI Galway: organisation of an international conference Gender Nation Text (2010); a GNT Summer School (2012); a conference, ‘From Ego to Eco’ (June 2011) and symposium ‘Ecopoetry Now!’ (January 2012). In addition, GDI organised an international conference, Behind the Lines: Women, War and Letters, 1880-1922 (May 2012) at UL. Two edited collections and a special edition of a journal are currently in preparation as outputs of these activities. GDI participants also chaired/convened an international, ESF-funded, conference on Religion, Gender and Human Rights (Linkoping, Sweden 2011) and a related workshop on Gender, Spirituality, Politics and Society at NUI Galway (June 2012). An edited collection (of 25 chapters) will be published in 2013 (Routledge, NY). Also in 2012, members organised a Moore Institute sponsored workshop, Art, Archives and Public Sphere: Memories in the West of Ireland (March 2012).
