The Art of Travel

Early modern theory, advice and critique

9-10 October 2009

Seminar Room 203

Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences

National University of Ireland, Galway

This international conference will discuss the importance of early modern advice on travel known as the ars apodemica (art of travel). Essays, letters, treatises and orations abounded on this subject in Europe, giving moral guidance, instructions on what to observe and how to structure the acquired knowledge, and analyses of national character. Among the main authors, we find figures such as Francis Bacon, Sir Philip Sidney, Justus Lipsius, and many others. The impact of this literature can be seen in the development of anthropology, natural history, and the reform of scientific method generally.

Leading specialists from the UK, Austria, Italy, France, Ireland, and Sweden will be speaking, including Prof. Justin Stagl (Salzburg), author of A History of Curiosity; Prof. Jean Boutier (Marseille), co-author of Un tour de France royal; and Dr. Joan-Pau Rubi̩s (LSE), author of Travel and Ethnology in the Renaissance.

The full program is available on the website of the Moore Institute, www.mooreinstitute.ie.
