Strength in Numbers: Data and Science in Soccer

Professor John Newell is Professor of Biostatistics in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, University of Galway, an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Canterbury, New Zealand and former Head of the Biostatistics Unit of the HRB Clinical Research Facility University of Galway. He is a member of the University of Galway’s Sonraí Health Data Science Research Cluster. Through his role as funded Principal Investigator in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, his team of researchers help sports scientists in elite sporting organisations make sense of their data in order to improve training response, accelerate recovery and optimise performance. In this talk he will discuss and showcase recent advances in statistical approaches applied to elite sports with a particular emphasis on soccer.
