Irish Studies’ Visiting Scholar Dr Hilary Bishop from Liverpool John Moores University, who undertook a Visiting Research Fellowship at the Moore Institute last year, has returned to County Galway this summer to record a series of Mass Paths in the parish of Lackagh. As part of her ongoing research into mass rocks and mass paths across Ireland, Hilary gave an interview on Galway Bay FM and will be featured in the Tuam Herald newspaper later this week.

Having identified the cluster of paths in the archives here at the Hardiman Library, Dr Bishop successfully applied for a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant and will be working alongside professional photographer Caitríona Dunnett to map and photograph the paths through their project which will result in a photographic exhibition during Galway’s year as Capital of Culture in 2020. Some of the photographs from the exhibition will then go on permanent display at Lackagh Heritage Centre in an effort to increase visitor numbers to the local museum.
