Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by the Irish Research Council and is available from 15/01/2024 to contract end date of 14/01/2025.

The successful candidate will be part of the team for Irish Research Council Laureate project VICO (Rural Villages, Migration, and Intercultural Communication), ID IRCLA/2022/3840. They will be involved in aa sociolinguistic study of migration in Ireland, with a specific focus on rural areas.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out ethnographic research in rural communities in Ireland, in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI). The research will investigate the languages spoken by migrants/refugees living in rural areas, the availability of multilingual information and services to them, their strategies for language learning and the obstacles that they face in establishing a relationship with the community where they live.

Duties:

  • Support in maintaining contact with local communities and civil society organisations, supporting the negotiation of collaborations and partnerships
  • Carry out semi-structured interviews with research participants;
  • Carry out ethnographic observations in relevant sites;
  • Transcription and coding of interviews;
  • Co-author publications resulting from the research (report, conference paper, journal article);
  • Collaborate in the organisation of a community outreach event.
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in Linguistics or related area, especially in Applied Linguistics or Sociolinguistics (submitted before interview date)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work well both collaboratively and independently
  • Highly motivated, with excellent organisational skills
  • Experience working with migrant or refugee communities
  • Experience in qualitative research (especially ethnographic methods)

Desirable Requirements:

  • Peer-reviewed publication record
  • Experience of community outreach and partnerships outside academia
  • English proficiency plus a degree of expertise in one or two additional languages (preferably including at least one of the following: Polish, French, Romanian, Lithuanian, Spanish, German, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Ukrainian).

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €42,033 – €54,153 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
