Ollscoil na Gaillimhe-University of Galway is seeking to fill a full-time, fixed term Postdoctoral Researcher position for the research project ‘Republic of Conscience: Human Rights and Modern Irish Poetry’. The position is funded by the Irish Research Council, under the Consolidator Laureate Scheme and is available from 1 March 2023 for 3 months. 

The research project ‘Republic of Conscience: Human Rights and Modern Irish Poetry’ (ROC) is led by Prof. Rióna Ní Fhrighil, Principal Investigator (School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures).

The postdoctoral researcher will engage in interdisciplinary research under the direction of Professor Rióna Ní Fhrighil, Principal Investigator. The successful candidate will contribute to the overall development of the research project but will be expected to focus on Work Package 1 – twentieth and twenty-first century Irish poetry composed in the English language. 

The work of the post-doctoral researcher includes the following duties:

  • Collate relevant English-language data (poems)
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis on data
  • Input data into project searchable database
  • Review and update as appropriate current database entries
  • Prepare research work for publication on the online searchable database, individually or in collaboration with research team, and disseminate results as appropriate.
  • Collate and input relevant texts translated into English.
  • Conduct individual and/or collaborative research, including contributing to the development of new interdisciplinary research methods
  • Join external networks to share information and ideas, to form relationships for future research collaboration and to identify potential sources of funding
  • Associated administrative duties.

Eligibility Requirements 

Essential Requirements:

Suitable candidates must meet the following criteria

  • PhD in relevant discipline and in a relevant specialism (English Literature, Irish literature, Irish Studies, or pertinent field)
  • Evidence of data-input experience
  • Experience of working with databases
  • Evidence of advanced knowledge of human rights discourse
  • Experience of carrying out high quality literary research and analysis both independently and/or collaboratively
  • Track record of peer-reviewed research publications in area of poetry
  • Experience of working well both collaboratively and independently
  • Evidence of excellent organisational and time-management skills
  • Experience of event organisation and management.

Desirable Requirements:

It is also desirable that suitable candidates have experience in some or all of the following areas:

  • Evidence of good reading knowledge of at least one other language
  • Evidence of some knowledge of human rights discourse and/or literary translation theory
  • Previous experience in the area of Digital Humanities
  • Experience of quantitative research
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Experience of knowledge exchange activities.

Salary:  Postdoctoral Researcher €41,209 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from 1 March 2023
