CLOSED – Research Assistant Opportunity on ÚRSCÉAL Project
ÚRSCÉAL, a project to build an open-access digital collection of the Irish-language novel before 1920, seeks a Research Assistant to work part-time for a period of three or six months.
The project will build an open-access digital collection of the Irish-language novel for inclusion in the European Literary Text Collection (ELTeC), the state-of-the-art multilingual corpus of the European novel (1840-1920). ELTeC provides a collection of novel corpora that are comparable in nature, scope, and quality across several European languages. To date, seventeen European languages are represented in ELTeC and ÚRSCÉAL seeks to contribute an Irish-language novel collection to this important resource.
The Research Assistant will complete a set of tasks required to build the corpus, with a primary focus on transcribing and encoding Irish-language novels.
Initial training will be provided to the Research Assistant, but applicants with the following experience would have an advantage:
- Irish-language proficiency,
- experience of reading Cló Gaelach,
- experience of using a computer to transcribe printed texts,
- familiarity with TEI, XML, or similar markup languages.
The entirety of the work will require approximately 200 hours, with a Research Assistant employed for either 6 months at 0.2 FTE or 3 months at 0.4 FTE, at Point 7 on the Research Assistant Salary Scale (€31,936 per annum).
Please send expressions of interest (with a short CV) or queries to Dr Justin Tonra, School of English and Creative Arts, University of Galway before 5pm, Monday 3 October 2022: justin.tonra@universityofgalway.ie
ÚRSCÉAL is funded by the Strategic Research Development Scheme of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies, NUI Galway. For further information on ELTeC, see https://www.distant-reading.net/eltec/
