The Moore Institute welcomes COST Action Group

On Thursday and Friday, January 24 and 25, 2013 the Moore Institute will welcome to NUI Galway members of the COST Action ISO901 : äóÖWomen Writers in History: Towards a New Understanding of European Literary Culture’. äóÖWomen Writers in History: Towards a New Understanding of European Literary Culture’ is a research network funded by the ESF COST programme for the period 2009-2013. The network currently consists of 100 researchers from 27 countries. Research is focused on the reception of women’s writing in Europe prior to 1900. It aims to answer the following research questions: what was the extent of women writers’ influence? Which active roles did they play as authors and readers in the broadest sense of the word, i.e. including their roles as transcribers, translators, mediators and educators? What happened to them when they fell into the hands of 19th-century canonizers? How is their disappearance from literary history to be explained? The COST programme has funded travel for research meetings, training schools and short-term scientific missions. (For the relevant COST websites, see http://www.costwwih.net/ and http://www.cost.esf.org/domains_actions/isch/Actions/IS0901-Women-Writers-in-History-Toward-a-New-Understanding-of-European-Literary-Culture-End-date-May-2013.) The Action has a significant Digital Humanities dimension: data on the reception and internationalization of women’s literature is shared in an online database (see http://www.womenwriters.nl/index.php/Database_WomenWriters). This database will now be further developed into a Virtual Research Environment, funding for which has just been awarded by CLARIN-NL (see http://www.womenwriters.nl/index.php/COBWWWEB). The core group of the Action’s Management Committee will be meeting at the Moore Institute, Galway, 24-25 January (see participants list, below). The meeting is hosted at Galway by Marie-Louise Coolahan (English), who is Secretary of the Management Committee, and Leader of Working Group 2: Tools and Interconnectivity (as well as the Irish representative). The project is in its final year of COST funding, and the meeting to be held in Galway is focused on management of this final period. In addition, we hope to have a networking meeting with NUI Galway researchers involved in the Structured PhD in Digital Arts & Humanities and the Digital Humanities more broadly.
