DESCRIPTION:Professor Enrico Dal Lago\n“The Social Origins of Agrarian Violence in Comparative Perspective: The First Ku Klux Klan in South Carolina and the Early Mafia in Sicily\, 1865-1875”\nA comparative historical project focusing on the events and transformations that occurred in the United States in the period after the American Civil War and in Italy in the period after national unification can help us understand better the deep economic\, social\, and political changes experienced by the rural areas of the nineteenth-century Euro-American world. \nThis is especially true with regard to the U.S. South and southern Italy after 1865 and in relation to issues such as the agrarian elites’ ideologies and practices of power and the labour relations that characterized the agrarian countryside of the two regions – one of which was a former slave society\, while the other one was a long-term free labour society. My aim in implementing the methodology of comparative history in this project is to research the specific ways in which the agrarian elites in the U.S. South and southern Italy\, despite the temporary loss of power they experienced in the aftermath of the American Civil War and of Italian national unification\, managed to maintain a tight grip on the agrarian working classes of the two southern regions – i.e.\, freed African Americans and free southern Italian peasants – preventing them from moving beyond the social status quo. In this lecture\, I compare the Reconstruction U.S. South with post-unification southern Italy by investigating specifically the reasons behind the origin and expansion of violent practices of agrarian vigilantism and criminal activity in the cotton-producing regions of upcountry South Carolina and in the citrus-growing regions of coastal western Sicily. In comparable terms\, in both the cases of upcountry South Carolina and coastal western Sicily\, those violent practices were tightly related to both a regional agrarian past and the specific historical circumstances of the period between 1865 and 1875. The general theme of the conference is “Data in Digital Humanities”. Keynote speakers include Elisabeth Burr (University of Leipzig) and Leonid Borodkin (Lomonosov Moscow State University). A roundtable session on the theme of data and digital humanities will be curated by Christof Schöch (University of Trier). Over 130 papers will be presented on issues such as the transformation of data for cultural heritage\, use of data analytics in literary studies\, natural language processing\, data visualisation and modelling\, and much more. (Courtesy of the family of Noel Coade). \nFrom the mid-1920s to the 1960s\, audiences on both sides of the border flocked to parish and commercial dance halls to dance to big band jazz\, popular music\, and other styles as played by Irish “sit down” dance bands and orchestras. Well known touring groups such as the Mick Delahunty Orchestra\, the Maurice Mulcahy Band\, and the Gay McIntyre Band\, as well as smaller\, semi-professional dance bands such as the Brideside Serenaders (Tallow) and many others performed from sheet music of American big band jazz standards that were arranged and published in London and then imported to Ireland and Northern Ireland.  They also played a range of other music\, including Dixieland jazz\, popular Irish songs\, old time waltzes\, and the occasional céilí dance. \nFocusing primarily on sit down dance band musicians who were active in the post-World War II years\, I argue that these musicians functioned\, in part\, as laborers whose job it was to keep their audiences dancing. As such\, they engaged with their audiences’ fascination with American popular music and culture while at the same time\, reflected Irish locality and musical aesthetics. \nUsing ethnographic interviews and archival sources\, I also trace how these musicians\, increasingly came to see themselves also as entertainers and artists. It was this changing perception that in part informed the emergence of the showband era of the 1960s/1970s and ultimately Ireland’s popular music industry. \nRebecca Miller is Professor of Music at Hampshire College\, in Amherst\, Massachusetts\, and the 2018-2019 IACI-NUI Galway\, Visiting Fellow in Irish Studies. Dr. Miller received a MA from Wesleyan University and the PhD in ethnomusicology from Brown University. \nThe author of Carriacou String Band Serenade: Performing Identity in the Eastern Caribbean (Wesleyan University Press\, 2008)\, Professor Miller has published articles and chapters on traditional and popular music in both Ireland and in the USA. A recipient of Fulbright and Whiting Fellowships\, among others\, she is currently completing a book on Irish popular music\, specifically Irish dance bands/orchestras and showbands.

DESCRIPTION:This semester we’re going to run a weekly session for those interested in learning “creative coding”. This approach is a good way for those without any coding experience to develop a foundation in programming. The sessions will use online resources (see below) to guide self-directed learning. \n\nCreative coding is a different discipline than programming systems. The goal is to create something expressive instead of something functional. Interaction design\, information visualization and generative art are all different types of creative coding – which has become a household term describing artworks articulated as code. SUMMARY:Geopolitics and Justice Cluster: Human Security Talk
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Estrada-Tanck (University of Murcia\, Spain) \n“Human security and international human rights law in the Mediterranean crisis” \nAbstract: \nThe unspeakable tragedy faced by thousands of migrant persons dying at sea trying to reach the European Mediterranean coast from the Middle East and North Africa has resulted in nearly 2\,000 registered deaths in 2018. This situation\, deriving from the protection gaps and deficient and unjust migration policies of national\, EU and international legal systems\, compel us to propose novel theoretical frameworks for thought and action. Human security has been advanced as the protection of the vital core of all human lives in ways that enhance human freedoms and human fulfillment\, and safeguarding people from critical and pervasive threats and situations. I make the argument that a human security approach adds significant value to the traditional purely legal analysis of human rights. Drawing on UN and European human rights law and jurisprudence\, I will explore the concrete ways in which this may play out in practice. I contend that human security and human rights can act together as a blueprint to address the Mediterranean crisis in a more just and efficient manner\, and thus address one of the greatest challenges of our time. \nAbout the speaker:  Dorothy Estrada-Tanck is Assistant Professor of International Law at the University of Murcia\, Spain. She holds a PhD in Law from the European University Institute\, an MSc in Political Theory from LSE and a law degree (Mexico City). DESCRIPTION:Modernist Studies Ireland’s monthly forum for new on-going work in Irish modernist studies—Works in Progress—cordially invites you to its third session of this autumnal season\, taking place on Tuesday\, 20th Nov.\, from 6-8 pm in The Bridge Room (THB)\, as per usual with nibbles and wine. This seminar will open to view the much understudied literary modernism of Irish language writers in the twentieth century. We’re honoured to welcome two speakers from NUI Galway’s Centre for Irish studies for the occasion. Hardiman and IRC scholar Eoin Byrne will be speaking about ‘Semantic Succour: The Languages of Irish Modernism’ in the context of the works of Samuel Beckett\, Máirtín Ó Cadhain\, and Brian Ó Nualláin (Flann O’Brien)\, illuminating the late-modernist cultural production during Ireland’s postcolonial moment. A multilingual approach to this cultural moment\, Eoin’s paper posits\, not only strengthens the New Modernist Studies’ ‘vertical expansion’; it also helps in better sketching the blurred borders between modernist and postmodernist aesthetics more generally. Our second speaker is IRC and Hardiman scholar Síobhra Aiken\, who recently curated the exhibition Máirtín Ó Direáin: Fathach File/Reluctant Modernist\, held in NUI Galway from March-July 2018\, and currently on tour. Síobhra’s talk\, entitled ‘“Ní file ach filíocht an bhean”: Towards a Gendered Reading of Irish Language Modernist Poetry’\, will put the gendered streak of Irish language modernist poetry centre stage. SUMMARY:Talk on Islam and Comparative Theology  “The People of The Book\, ahl al-kitāb: A Modern Comparative Theological Exploration” by Richard Kimball (TCD)
DESCRIPTION:This paper examines the use of the Qur’ānic term ahl al-kitāb by several contemporary Muslim and Christian scholars in the context of our increasingly interconnected and pluralist societies. The Arabic term ahl al-kitāb is frequently translated as the People of the Book. The People of the Book are the religious communities that the Qur’ān identifies as following divine revelation in the form of a book. Traditionally these communities are Jews\, Christians\, Sabians and to a lesser extent Zoroastrians. Sometimes the Qur’ān praises these communities and their sacred texts and other times they are criticised. Therefore\, what the Qur’ān has to say about these communities and their texts is highly contextual\, requiring nuanced understanding of any verse in question. \nFor Islamic scholars\, the application of the Qur’ānic commentary tradition\, known as tafsīr allows for an authoritative link to the past that anchors their contribution in modern discourse. Variations from past interpretations of particular social issues\, due to modern social pressures like participation as equal citizens in multi-faith and multi-cultural societies\, often follow formal reflection on past scholarship\, combined with the introduction of new modern contexts as variables in the decision-making process. The research subsequently demonstrates the resilience of the parameters set within the traditional commentary for Muslim interlocutors. Therefore\, this paper posits\, greater awareness by Christians of the application of the traditional commentary\, can play an important role in the development of improved dialogue and cooperation\, whereby each may respect the other as fully Muslim and fully Christian. \n  \nKey words: ahl al-kitāb\, asbâb an-nuzûl\, bid‘ah\, fitra\, hadīth\, People of the Book\, ra’y\, sahabah\, tafsīr\, tabi’un\, taqlīd. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This semester we’re going to run a weekly session for those interested in learning “creative coding”. This approach is a good way for those without any coding experience to develop a foundation in programming. The sessions will use online resources (see below) to guide self-directed learning. \n\nCreative coding is a different discipline than programming systems. The goal is to create something expressive instead of something functional. Interaction design\, information visualization and generative art are all different types of creative coding – which has become a household term describing artworks articulated as code. DESCRIPTION:Digital Scholarship Seminar 43: Peter Stokes \n12pm | Tues 20 Nov 2018 | Arts Millennium/Psychology Building G067 \nPeter Stokes (Paris\, École Pratique des Hautes Études\, Université PSL) \nModelling texts and manuscripts: some digital approaches to material texts \nPalaeographers\, codicologists and indeed textual editors have long engaged with technological developments and the challenges that they present\, and recent years are no exception to that. Developments in digital imaging\, the internet\, the availability of powerful computers and new algorithms in machine vision and artificial intelligence: all these are already transforming the way we study and understand books and the texts they contain. Nevertheless\, real questions remain here. What does it mean to represent a material object digitally: what do we gain and lose\, and when does it matter? Where are the foreseeable limits to what the computer can achieve? Conversely\, are we fully taking advantage of all the computer has to offer? Are we driving the technology\, or is it leading us? This talk will discuss these issues through consideration of some recent developments in the application of digital and computational methods to historical books and writing\, focussing particularly on the recently completed ‘Exon’ project on the Exon Domesday survey of South-West England.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe third biennial Celtic Sociolinguistics Symposium will take place at NUIG in November 16th-17th 2018. As in the previous two Celtic Sociolinguistics symposia\, we have attracted a diversity of scholars working in various areas related to linguistic and sociocultural aspects of one (or more) of the six Celtic languages.  This year’s theme is ‘Communities in Conversation\,’ a theme which seeks to facilitate further collaboration between academics and the many different social actors working towards the maintenance of one (or more) of the Celtic languages within the community.  Over the two days\, we will have over fifteen paper presentations\, four plenaries delivered by Dr. Holly Kennard (Oxford Univeristy)\, Dr. Noel Ó Murchadha (Trinity College Dublin)\, Dr Gwennan Higham (Swansea University) and Dr. Stuart Dunmore (University of Edinburgh)\, and a media panel organised by Dr. John Walsh (NUIG).  More information\, including the programme\, can be found on our website.

Has your writing has taken a little bit of a back step due to the growing demands of the semester? \nCome along and join us in the Bridge Room from 5.00-6.30pm on Thursday 15th November where we will simply WRITE and have (quick 5 minute) chats about what we are working on and exchange writing tips or rants! \nThis is not a peer-review session where feedback will be offered\, but a writing session where we will write as a group to the same clock. EDEN’s Write Club takes its title and inspiration from Dr. Ian Walsh who established Write Club three years ago year as a weekly writing group which is usually held in the O’Donoghue Centre for Drama\,Theatre and Performance which was passed onto us by Ciara L. Murphy and Justine Nakase. In this session\, we will use the Pomodoro Technique where we will write for 25 minutes\, and take a break for 5 minutes (x3). \nCome and give it a try!
