DESCRIPTION:The Art of Travel \nEarly modern theory\, advice and critique \n9-10 October 2009 \nSeminar Room 203 \nMoore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences \nNational University of Ireland\, Galway \nThis international conference will discuss the importance of early modern advice on travel known as the ars apodemica (art of travel). Essays\, letters\, treatises and orations abounded on this subject in Europe\, giving moral guidance\, instructions on what to observe and how to structure the acquired knowledge\, and analyses of national character. Among the main authors\, we find figures such as Francis Bacon\, Sir Philip Sidney\, Justus Lipsius\, and many others.
