SUMMARY:School of Physics Seminar Programme 2012-2013 - Massive Star Formation in the Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:Massive Star Formation in the Milky Way\nNew surveys at infrared and radio wavelengths are providing the means\nto systematically search our Galaxy for new massive stars in the process\nof forming. Although rare\, massive stars have a profound affect on their\nenvironment and the evolution of galaxies. The methodologies and\noutstanding questions concerning the physical processes in massive star\nbirth will be discussed.\nThe speaker is Prof. Melvin Hoare. He obtained his PhD in 1988\nat UCL and after periods at Oxford and Heidelberg\, joined the star\nformation group at Leeds. He performs multi-wavelength\nobservations of massive star formation\, has led various radio\nsurveys of the galactic plane and is on the science\nworking group for the next generation Square\nKilometre Array project.

SUMMARY:Beckett Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Beckett Reading Group \nAll readings will be kept short\, as this reading group is meant to inspire not increase the work that everyone is doing. We will be concentrating on his radio and television plays for our first meetings. We hope that considering the implications of these works as texts will lead to stimulating discussion. We hope to foster a dialogue about how these texts are studied as ‰Û÷texts‰۪\, rather than or alongside the medium in which they were incepted. Group members are welcome to bring critical pieces into discussion\, but there is no pressure to do so. In fact\, coming with visceral reactions that form critical inquiry as discussions progress is encouraged. Email Kristin Jones at k.jones1@nuigalway.ie and David Delaney d.delaney2@nuigalway.ie with any questions. \nWeek Four: 4 Dec. Nacht und TrÌ_ume \nWe will reconvene in Semester 2.

SUMMARY:Public Concert - Guth Binn 7 T̩ada ÌÒir ̢åÛå¢ Bardic Voices\, Horns And Medieval Harps - with Ann & Charlie Heymann\, Lillis ÌÒ Laoire and Simon Dwyer
DESCRIPTION:Guth Binn 7 T̩ada ÌÒir ‰ۢ Bardic Voices\, Horns and medieval harps \nOn Friday\, November 30th at 7 pm\, NUI Galway’s Aula Maxima will resound with the ancient sounds of early Irish harp\, voice and horn. Gold-strung clÌÁirseachs played by Ann Heymann will accompany 7th-18th century Gaelic poems (including genres of laoi\, rosc and amhrÌÁn) sung by Charlie Heymann and Lillis ÌÒ Laoire. For contrast\, early Welsh poetry by the famous poets Aneirin and Taliesin\, will be performed\, accompanied by horsehair harp\, crwth and various lyres. Adding to the musical soundscape are Simon O’Dwyer’s pre-historic and medieval horns\, bells and pipes. A wine reception follows the concert\, allowing for an opportunity to meet the performers and get a closer look at the instruments. \nAnn Heymann is renowned for having recreated specialized techniques that articulate the voice of the clÌÁirseach. Her visionary use of gold wire\, which is based both on evidence in the literature and in the physical construction of the clÌÁirseach\, has restored to the instrument a brilliant rich voice. Husband Charlie\, a graduate of Northwestern University’s inaugural ethnomusicology programme\, is both a vocalist and instrumentalist\, and for over thirty-five years the couple have performed and taught across four continents. The couple is currently at NUI Galway\, Ann having been awarded a Moore Institute Fellowship to study the use of the harp in the performance of early Irish poetry. Lillis ÌÒ Laoire\, lecturer in Irish and Head of School\, Languages\, Literatures and Cultures at NUI\, Galway\, is an award winning Gaelic singer\, scholar\, and writer from the Gaelic speaking region of Donegal. He teaches courses in Gaelic language\, culture and folklore at NUI\, Galway\, and his publications include ‘On a Rock in the Middle of the Ocean: Songs and Singers in Tory Island\, Ireland’ (2005). Simon O’Dwyer has brought the sound of ancient Irish horns\, bells and pipes to audiences around the globe. Author of “Prehistoric Music of Ireland”\, O’Dwyer documents both his research and his making of these reproduction instruments. This event is free and open to the public and takes place in the Aula Maxima\, NUI\, Galway\, on Friday\, the 30 November at 7:00 pm.

\nWeek Three: 20 Nov. ‰Û_but the clouds‰Û_ \nWeek Four: 4 Dec.
