DESCRIPTION:A weekly seminar on the Middle Irish Tale\nAirec menman Iraird maic Coisse\n‘The Stratagem of Irard mac Coisse’ \nled by Prof. MÌÁirÌ_n NÌ_ Dhonnchadha (School of Humanities) \nEvery Wednesday at 12.00 noon \nbeginning Wednesday 23 January 2013 \nin the Moore Institute Seminar Room \nThe 10th-century Connacht poet Irard mac Coisse is titled ‘prÌ_m̩ices Ìärenn ‘Ireland’s foremost poet’ in his annalistic obituary (‰ÛÊ990). Among his   patrons were such leading Irish figures as the king of Tara\, Domnall   (‰ÛÊ980) ̼a N̩ill\, and his queen\, Der FÌÁil (‰ÛÊ1010). Poems he wrote in   their honour are among his extant works. The most important text   attributed to him is the long allegorical tale Airec menman Iraird Coisse. Many scholars have commented on its great significance for understanding Gaelic literary tradition. \nIn   Week 1 and 2\, a literary context for this work will be outlined. SUMMARY:Robert Savage\, Boston College:  '"The Troubles" the BBC and the politics of censorship 1969-1974'
DESCRIPTION:‘”The Troubles” the BBC and the politics of censorship 1969-1974’\nRobert Savage is a member of the Boston College Department of History. He has written widely on contemporary Irish history including the origins and evolution of television in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. The American Conference for Irish Studies awarded him the 2010 James S. Donnelly\, Sr. Prize for Best Book in History and Social Sciences for his most recent book A loss on innocence? Television and Irish Society 1960-1972. He is currently a Fellow at the More Institute. His research has been supported by grants and visiting fellowships from the Long Room Hub at Trinity College\, Dublin\,  the University of Edinburgh\, the Leverhulme Trust of Great Britain and the Centre for Irish Studies at NUIG. He served as a director of the Irish Studies program at Boston College from 1995-2010. \nThroughout ‰Û÷the Troubles‰۪ government-imposed censorship\, accompanying self-censorship practiced by anxious broadcasters\, raised critical questions about the freedom of the press and threats to basic civil rights. Throughout the conflict both British and Irish governments resolved to influence if not control how the media presented years of political turmoil and unrest. However\, the omnipresence of television compromised their efforts to present an uncomplicated picture ‰ÛÓ i.e. of the forces of law and order struggling to defeat savage terrorists bent on a campaign of murder and mayhem. This paper will address the efforts of British governments to shape reporting of the conflict in the early years of unrest in Northern Ireland.

She is also an associate researcher at the Hans and Tamara Oppenheimer Chair in International Law at McGill University\, Montreal\, Canada (see http://oppenheimer.mcgill.ca/Ekaterina-Yahyaoui-Krivenko). \nPreviously\, Ekaterina Yahyaoui Krivenko taught public international law\, women’s rights\, international refugee and migration law\, and human rights and Islam at the Faculty of Law\, University of Montreal. She was also a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for International Studies and Research and the Canada Chair in International Migration Law of the University of Montreal. Before joining CERIUM she worked\, among other things\, as a legal advisor for a project at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  Ekaterina Yahyaoui Krivenko is a member of the Quebec Bar and holds a B.A. from Geneva University (Switzerland)\, an LL.M. from the University Albert-Ludwigs (Freiburg i. DESCRIPTION:A weekly seminar on the Middle Irish Tale\nAirec menman Iraird maic Coisse\n‘The Stratagem of Irard mac Coisse’ \nled by Prof. MÌÁirÌ_n NÌ_ Dhonnchadha (School of Humanities) \nEvery Wednesday at 12.00 noon \nbeginning Wednesday 23 January 2013 \nin the Moore Institute Seminar Room \nThe 10th-century Connacht poet Irard mac Coisse is titled ‘prÌ_m̩ices Ìärenn ‘Ireland’s foremost poet’ in his annalistic obituary (‰ÛÊ990). Among his patrons were such leading Irish figures as the king of Tara\, Domnall (‰ÛÊ980) ̼a N̩ill\, and his queen\, Der FÌÁil (‰ÛÊ1010). Poems he wrote in their honour are among his extant works. The most important text attributed to him is the long allegorical tale Airec menman Iraird Coisse. Many scholars have commented on its great significance for understanding Gaelic literary tradition. \nIn Week 1 and 2\, a literary context for this work will be outlined. DESCRIPTION:Israel\, the United States and the American Jewish relationship to Israel\nDaniel Sokatch (CEO of the New Israel Fund)\nDaniel Sokatch is the Chief Executive Officer of the New Israel Fund  (NIF)\, the leading organization committed to equality and democracy for  all Israelis (www.nif.org). The NIF funds and supports social change  organisations in Israel\, opposes inequality\, injustice and extremism and  often takes the initiative in setting the public agenda. Before joining  NIF\, Sokatch served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Community  Federation of San Francisco. Prior to his tenure at Federation\, he  served as the founding Executive Director of the Los Angeles based  Progressive Jewish Alliance. In recognition of his leadership\, Sokatch  has been named to the Forward newspaper’s “Forward 50\,” an annual list  of the fifty leading Jewish decision-makers and opinion-shapers in the  US\, in 2002\, 2005 and 2008 and 2010. Daniel has an MA from the Fletcher  School at Tufts University\, a JD from Boston College Law School\, and a  BA from Brandeis University.His talk will address the current  political situation in Israel in the wake of an election which is  expected to produce a significant move to the right and the current  situation in Washington\, DC regarding Israel and Palestine.It will  examine the current state of the American Jewish relationship to Israel  and the role that this plays in relations between the United States and  Israel and in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Sponsored by the School of Political Science and Sociology and the Whitaker Institute For further information contact niall.odochartaigh@nuigalway.ie
