SUMMARY:Guerrilla Digitisation: An Introduction to Bookscanning
DESCRIPTION:The Moore Institute will host a free one-day workshop\, Guerrilla Digitisation: An Introduction to Bookscanning\, from 11am-4pm on Monday\, May 12. \nLed by Meaghan Connell (PhD student\, English Department)\, this workshop is an introduction to the process of digitising texts using only low-cost materials. Digitised texts can be very useful to the humanities researcher; before you can use any kind of computational analysis\, you must first create a machine-readable version of your text(s). With machine-readable texts\, you can run corpus analyses\, create concordances and collocations\, and even perform stylometry analyses. If your work involves any computational analysis\, or if you want to look into including computational analysis in your work\, this workshop may be useful to you. \nThis workshop is aimed at scholars in the Arts and Humanities\, both postgrad students and faculty. This is a hands-on workshop – we will be going through the build of a budget bookscanner and the entire process of scanning\, post-processing\, and optical character recognition. If you want to build your own budget bookscanner at the workshop\, you will need to bring certain materials. Basic computer literacy is a must\, but a gentle introduction to the specific software we’ll be using will be provided. \nSpaces are limited for this workshop\, so you are advised to register your interest by emailing m.connell3@nuigalway.ie as soon as possible.

DESCRIPTION:Pushing Form: Innovation and Interconnection in Contemporary European Performance\nKeynotes: Sodja Lotker and Milija Gluhovic\nHow does the present reality of European theatre and performance challenge traditional assumptions? And howspecifically does formal innovation provide the space for critiques of power that may rework the concept of ‰ÛÏEurope‰۝ as realizedthrough performance? How has performance responded to neoliberalism and globalization in the wake of the most recentworld economic crisis\, and how does its specifically European context set the terms of this response? \nThis conference queries what it means to define the field of European performance. \nwww.conference.ie/conferences/index.asp?conference=245 \nFor registration information please contact \nsiobhanmogorman@gmail.com\, miriamhaughton@hotmail.com\, charlotte.mcivor@nuigalway.ie

SUMMARY:Workshop: Computational Stylometry: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Computational Stylometry: An Introduction\nMoore Institute\, NUI Galway\, 24 April 2014\nThis one-day workshop led by Dr Francesca Benatti (Open University) is a hands-on introduction to stylometric analysis using Stylo\, a tool created for use in the statistical programming language R. \nWhat is Computational Stylometry?Computational stylometry (or stylistics) is the study of how the stylistic features of texts can be measured through computer-aided statistical methods. \nHow is it used?Regularly used in the field of authorship attribution\, Computational Stylometry has potential applications to a wide range of fields and disciplines that examine texts. In addition to authorship attribution\, Computational Stylometry may be used to investigate relationships between texts in such areas as gender\, genre\, and chronology. \nFor example?J. K. Rowling was recently exposed as the author of the pseudonymous novel\, The Cuckoo’s Calling\, thanks to the Computational Stylometric work of Patrick Juola. A professor of computer science\, Juola also runs a private consulting firm that applies stylometric techniques to disputed documents and in psychological profiling for the legal professions. Similar techniques have aided historical research by verifying the authenticity of letters written during the American Civil War\, and sought to reveal how pronouns and other function words reveal personality traits and relationship roles. \nWhat does the workshop involve? It will include an introduction to the history and theory of stylometry\, and will focus on the practical application of the Stylo package. Alongside examples of Stylo’s use\, participants will complete hands-on practical exercises with the tool. A set of sample texts will be supplied\, but participants are free to bring their own texts in plain text or TEI XML format. \nWhat is the schedule for the day?10.00-10.30 Introduction to Stylometry10.30-11.00 Installation of R and Stylo; settings and options11.00-11.30 The stylo function; hands-on practice11.30-12.00 Tea break12.00-13.00 The oppose function; hands-on practice13.00-14.00 Lunch14.00-14.30 Case study: authorship attribution and the Christabel review14.30-15.30 The classify function; hands-on practice15.30-16.00 Open session: practice / discussion / Q and A \nI am interested\, but am not sure this is for me…Computational stylometry can be either a means or an end. While is it used to identify authors andverify documents\, it can also be employed for more exploratory purposes: for identifying patternsand sequences within a text or group of texts. If your work involves analysing texts\, this workshopmay be useful to you. \nDo I need to be a programmer to learn this? No. This workshop is led by and aimed at scholars in the Arts and Humanities. Some experience withcomputer-aided text-analysis will be a benefit\, but nothing other than general digital literary isrequired. \nAnything else I should know?Attendance is free. Places are limited on this workshop\, however\, so you are advised to register yourinterest as soon as possible. Attendees will be required to bring their own laptops: R and Stylo willnot work on mobile devices. \nOk\, you’ve sold me. What do I do now?Contact Justin Tonra (justin.tonra@nuigalway.ie) to register your interest in participating. Youshould mention any previous experience you have had with text-mining or text-analysis\, anddescribe how the workshop relates to your own work.

DESCRIPTION:Copyright Reform in Ireland and Reflections on the WIPO Marrakesh Treaty \nCopyright\, Education\, and Disability: Past\, Present\, and Future \nhttps://www.nuigalway.ie/cdlp/forthcoming_events.html \nA seminar organized jointly by DREAM (https://www.nuigalway.ie/dream/)\, DISCIT (http://www.discit.edu) and the Centre for Disability Law & Policy (NUI Galway) (https://www.nuigalway.ie/cdlp/) \nMain Speaker: Dr. Eoin O‰۪Dell\, \n Associate Professor of Law\, Trinity College & Chair of the Copyright Review Committee of Ireland. \nRespondents: Samantha Holman\n CEO of the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency \n Abigail Rekas\n Marie Curie Early Stage Research Fellow \nThe Centre for Disability Law & Policy is pleased to announce a public seminar on copyright reform in Ireland on 4 April\, 2014 at 6pm. The seminar will reflect on the recent Copyright Review Committee report\, Modernising Copyright\, and the new World Intellectual Property Organisation Marrakesh Treaty\, aimed at creating exceptions and limitations to benefit persons who are blind\, visually impaired or otherwise print disabled\, as well as easing cross-border transfer of accessible format books. \nDr. Eoin O’Dell\, one of the authors of the Modernising Copyright\, will speak on the experiences of academics\, students and persons with disabilities dealing with copyright law and practice. It will begin with an overview of the basic principles of copyright\, having regard to existing legislation and precedents (copyright past). It will then look at the important current copyright issues – in particular the problems which copyright law poses for people in education and for people with a disability (copyright present). And it will conclude with how these issues might change for the better\, if current reform proposals are implemented and if international treaties are implemented (copyright future). \n4 April 2014 Time: 6 ‰ÛÒ 7.30pm Venue: National University of Ireland\, Galway \nSeminar Room THB-G010\, The Hardiman Library \nRSVP to Abigail.rekas@nuigalway.ie
