DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Seminar Series:\nThe OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka: the catharsis moment for the protection and promotion of human rights or business as usual?by Mr. Glyn Morgan and Mr. Thamil Venthan Ananthavinayagan\, LL.M. (Maastricht)\nGlyn served in the British Army and British Police before spending six years in the Office of the Prosecutor at International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Thereafter\, he worked for eleven years at Europol dealing with trans-national organised crime. Since 2012 he worked as an independent consultant on “international crimes” i.e. war crimes & transnat OC. From December 2014 to March 2015 he worked as Military Advisor to OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka. \nThamil is a PhD candidate and Fellow at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. His PhD thesis deals with the Sri Lankan human rights system and inquires the unconducive nature of this system to international efforts\, predominantly the United Nations Human Rights Council\, to promote and protect human rights. \nThe talk will\, in its first section\, shed light on the reasons for human rights abuses that led to the outbreak of the civil war in Sri Lanka and then\, in its second section\, deal with the mandate\, working method and the thematic areas of the human rights investigation on Sri Lanka. The talk will\, subsequently analyse and discuss the governmental response and usher into a interactive dialogue between audience and speakers as how this OHCHR report could serve as a vehicle to achieve accountability in Sri Lanka and promote and protect human rights. \nAll are welcome! \nFor more information please contact ilangayan@googlemail.com

SUMMARY:The Culture of Italian Music: Opera and Colonialism - Prof. Paolo Bartoloni: Introduction\, Mario Inglese: The Italian Language and Opera: Verdi and Puccini - Alessandro Luchetti: The Music of Italian Colonization in Africa: Racism and Sexism
DESCRIPTION:School of Languages\, Literatures and Cultures \n Italian Studies \nThe Culture of Italian Music: Opera and Colonialism \nProf. Paolo Bartoloni: Introduction \nMario Inglese: The Italian Language and Opera: Verdi and Puccini \nAlessandro Luchetti: The Music of Italian Colonization in Africa: Racism and Sexism \nMario Inglese’s talk will focus on some traits of Italian as employed in Verdi’s late operas (Otello and Falstaff) and Puccini’s mature works. While considering the obvious differences in age and style\, one must remember that the careers of these two giants of operatic music did overlap\, albeit for a short span of time. \nMario Inglese is a Research Scholar at NUIG. He has taught at various universities in the US\, Australia\, and Canada. He has published extensively in the field of literary criticism\, poetry\, applied linguistics\, and opera and literature. \nAlessandro Luchetti’s talk will discuss the impact of colonial propaganda songs on Fascist society. A selection of songs from the late Thirties will be analysed in order to observe how racist and sexist stereotypes helped build a consensus around the colonial enterprise. \nAlessandro Luchetti is a PhD Student at NUIG. His main research interest focuses on postcolonial literature in Italian. \nFor more information please contact mario_inglese@yahoo.com
