SUMMARY:Digital Scholarship Seminar:Gerardine Meaney (University College Dublin) - A Comparative Social Network Analysis of Irish and English Fiction\, 1800-1922
DESCRIPTION:Digital Scholarship Seminar:\n \nGerardine Meaney (University College Dublin) \nA Comparative Social Network Analysis of Irish and English Fiction\, 1800-1922 \n \nThe Nation\, Genre and Gender: A Comparative Social Network Analysis of Irish and English Fiction\, 1800-1922 project is currently creating an electronic corpus of approximately 100 Irish and English novels from the period 1800-1922. It will use this corpus to identify key representative and influential texts for social network analysis\, generate visualisations of networks and their development\, apply intersectional (gender\, class\, ethnicity) analysis to network components\, and engage in intensive critical analysis. The objective of the project is to compare gender\, genre and the nationality of the author (or setting) in shaping social networks in fiction. Do the social networks mapped out by cumulative interactions between characters in Irish and English fiction differ from one another? Do the social networks represented in fiction differ substantially on the basis of genre or gender? How does this change across the time period? The historical range offers the opportunity for a longitudinal\, transhistorical analysis which can identify consistencies and changes. The aim of the project is not to substitute a quantitative\, computational approach for a critical and interpretative one\, but to explore ways in which these two approaches can be reconciled. This combination of digital and critical methodologies also offers a realistic and judicious way to reconcile the demands of a radically extended canon of fiction\, with its diversity of voices\, genres and perspectives\, and intense textual engagement. This paper will outline initial findings using Pride and Prejudice and Phineas Finn as examples. \nGerardine Meaney is Professor of Cultural Theory\, Director of the UCD Humanities Institute and PI of Nation\, Gender\, Genre. Recent publications include Reading the Irish Woman: Cultural Encounter and Exchange\, 1714-1960\, with Bernadette Whelan and Mary O’Dowd (2013)\, Gender\, Ireland and Cultural Change (2010) and an iPad app of James Joyce’s short story ‘The Dead’ (2014). \nSeminars are open to all and conclude with discussion over lunch \nFor further informatition\, contact: Dr PÌÁdraic Moran (padraic.moran@nuigalway.ie)\, \nor Dr Justitin Tonra (justitin.tonra@nuigalway.ie) \nwww.nuigalway.ie/digital-seminar ‰ۢ www.facebook.com/nuigdss

SUMMARY:Dr BrÌ_d McGrath - Managing the Windsor of Ireland: Galway's Town Council From 1603-1653
DESCRIPTION:Dr BrÌ_d McGrath \nManaging the Windsor of Ireland: Galway’s Town Council From 1603-1653 \nMonday\, 9 November at 8pm \nHarbour Hotel\, Dock Road\, Galway \nDr. McGrath’s talk explores one of Galway’s most outstanding treasures\, the ‰Û÷Liber A’ manuscript\, preserved in the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway \nThe lecture\, sponsored by the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society\, is based on Dr. McGrath’s research as a Moore Institute Visiting Fellow. \nIn this public talk\, Dr. McGrath will describe the membership of Galway’s town council and the people who controlled and managed the city in the first half of the 17th century. She will also discuss recently discovered letters from the famous Galway lawyer\, Patrick Darcy now held in the Huntington Library\, California. \nAccording to Dr. McGrath\, “Galway’s ‰Û÷Liber A’ is a truly unique manuscript and one of the town’s most precious treasures. While working on it\, I was able to discover how Galway was managed by its wealthy\, cultivated merchant elite in this period and the key role played by Galway men in Irish political life\, in parliament and the Confederation of Kilkenny.” \n‰Û÷Liber A’ is available online and features beautiful pen and ink drawings at: http://archives.library.nuigalway.ie/LiberA/html/LiberA.html

SUMMARY:Human Rights Lunchtime Seminar Series: LGBTI rights in Uganda - the state of human rights defenders in peril by Sandra Namutebi\, human rights defender from Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Seminar Series:\nLGBTI rights in Uganda – the state of human rights defenders in perilby Sandra Namutebi\, human rights defender from Uganda\nThe Irish Centre for Human Rights\, in cooperation with Front Line Defenders\, is pleased to welcome Sandra Namutebi\, a human rights defender for the LGBTI community in Uganda. \nIn February 2014\, Ugandan President Museveni signed a law outlawing homosexual acts which was then annulled in August 2014 due to a technical issue. Although this law no longer stands\, it reflects the widespread prejudice against the LGBTI community in Uganda; it is within this climate that Sandra works. The organisation she works with\, the National LGBTI Security Committee\, is a safety and protection body in Uganda that deals with emergencies of sexual minorities. They provide a hotline service for LGBTI community members and track and monitor abuses motivated by prejudice against the community. The political and social climate for human rights defenders\, particularly for those working for LGBTI rights\, is dangerous\, with hostility from both the government and society. Although fearful of the dangers and prejudices she faces daily\, Sandra continues her work and recognizes its importance in this increasingly difficult environment. \nSandra’s talk will touch upon a short history of Ugandan politics and society\, the general situation for human rights defenders in Uganda and the situation for LGBTI rights defenders in Uganda. Finally\, she will talk about her personal story\, as how governmental and societal issues affect her life and work. \nAll are welcome! \nFor more information please contact t.ananthavinayagan1@nuigalway.ie

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Engendering Ireland : New Reflections on Modern History and Literature
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Ireland\nNew Reflections on Modern History and Literature\nEditor(s):Rebecca Anne Barr\, Sarah-Anne Buckley\, Laura Kelly \nContributors: Laura Mernie Pomeroy\, Katharina Walter\, Eleanor O’Leary\, Myrtle Hill\, Declan O’Keeffe\, Marion Krauthaker\, Evelyn Glynn\, Mary Muldowney\, Claire McGing\, Charlotte McIvor; \nBook Description\nEngendering Ireland is a collection of ten essays showcasing the importance of gender in a variety of disciplines. These essays interrogate gender as a concept which encompasses both masculinity and femininity\, and which permeates history and literature\, culture and society in the modern period. The collection includes historical research which situates Irish women workers within an international economic context; textual analysis which sheds light on the effects of modernity on the home and rising female expectations in the post-war era; the rediscovery of significant Irish women modernists such as Mary Devenport O’Neill; and changing representations of masculinity\, race\, ethnicity and interculturalism in modern Irish theatre. Each of these ten essays provides a thought-provoking picture of the complex and hitherto unrecognised roles gender has played in Ireland over the last century. While each of these chapters offers a fresh perspective on familiar themes in Irish gender studies\, they also illustrate the importance and relevance of gender studies to contemporary debates in Irish society. \nFor more information please contact sarahanne.buckley@nuigalway.ie

SUMMARY:Digital Scholarship Seminar: Evan Bourke (NUI Galway) - Female Involvement\, Membership\, and Centrality: A Social Network Analysis of the Hartlib Circle
DESCRIPTION:Digital Scholarship Seminar:\nEvan Bourke (NUI Galway)\nFemale Involvement\, Membership\, and Centrality: A Social Network Analysis of the Hartlib Circle\nThe Hartlib circle was an intellectual correspondence network that was formed in London in 1641\, centred around Samuel Hartlib\, John Dury\, and Jan Amos Kaminski. This group was mainly active between 1641 and 1661\, and included well-known figures such as Robert Boyle\, Henry Oldenburg\, and Benjamin Worsley. However\, the network also had female members\, such as Lady Ranelagh\, and Dorothy Moore – and these women will be the focus of this talk. Through an extensive analysis of the Hartlib database this talk will introduce these women’s involvement in this network\, focusing on their participation in religious and scientific activities. Then\, using social network analysis\, this talk will interrogate the importance of these women’s involvement\, questioning whether they were important to the way information flowed through this network\, and whether their position in the network granted them influence over other members. \nConnect with DSS: Website | Facebook | Mailing list \nSeminars are open to all and conclude with discussion over lunch \nFor further informatition\, contact: Dr PÌÁdraic Moran (padraic.moran@nuigalway.ie)\, \nor Dr Justitin Tonra (justitin.tonra@nuigalway.ie)

SUMMARY:The Culture of Italian Music: Opera and Colonialism - Prof. Paolo Bartoloni: Introduction\, Mario Inglese: The Italian Language and Opera: Verdi and Puccini - Alessandro Luchetti: The Music of Italian Colonization in Africa: Racism and Sexism
DESCRIPTION:School of Languages\, Literatures and Cultures \n Italian Studies \nThe Culture of Italian Music: Opera and Colonialism \nProf. Paolo Bartoloni: Introduction \nMario Inglese: The Italian Language and Opera: Verdi and Puccini \nAlessandro Luchetti: The Music of Italian Colonization in Africa: Racism and Sexism \nMario Inglese’s talk will focus on some traits of Italian as employed in Verdi’s late operas (Otello and Falstaff) and Puccini’s mature works. While considering the obvious differences in age and style\, one must remember that the careers of these two giants of operatic music did overlap\, albeit for a short span of time. \nMario Inglese is a Research Scholar at NUIG. He has taught at various universities in the US\, Australia\, and Canada. He has published extensively in the field of literary criticism\, poetry\, applied linguistics\, and opera and literature. \nAlessandro Luchetti’s talk will discuss the impact of colonial propaganda songs on Fascist society. A selection of songs from the late Thirties will be analysed in order to observe how racist and sexist stereotypes helped build a consensus around the colonial enterprise. \nAlessandro Luchetti is a PhD Student at NUIG. His main research interest focuses on postcolonial literature in Italian. \nFor more information please contact mario_inglese@yahoo.com
