SUMMARY:Huston School of Film and Digital Media Guest Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Leon Butler \n \nLeon Butler has worked across a broad range of positions in the media industry as a visual narrative designer\, filmmaker\, and educator. He graduated from Huston’s MA in Digital Media in 2009 and his final project animated film\, Ghosts Before Dawn (2009)\, won the Gold Medal at the National Digital Media Awards. Since setting up his practice in 2010\, he has worked with high-profile clients including the Galway International Arts Festival\, who commissioned him to produce the iconic Festival Poster in 2011. He has also worked with clients as diverse as Starbucks on their global holiday campaign\, Druid Theatre on a promotional film for their iconic productions\, and musician Macklemore\, who commissioned Leon to document his 2014 visit to Dublin’s O2 for two sold out shows. He has also developed many personal projects in animation\, typography\, children’s illustration and documentary. His research interest areas include adaptive interactions and experiences using available data in the public sphere and generative typography and in 2015 he completed a residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York in this field. In 2016\, Leon received a ‘Certificate of Typographic Excellence’ from the Type Directors Club in New York. The Design and Craft Council of Ireland listed Leon as one of their ‘Future Makers’ for 2016. Leon has recently completed a 12-week residency in Los Angeles with digital agency 72andSunny in their 72u program. In September 2016 he was appointed as a design innovation research fellow on the Techinnovate program at NUI Galway for 2016-17.

Oil on Canvas\, 66 x 49.5 cm. \nAn undergraduate in university in England during the 1970s\, returning to tertiary education after work in the television and film industries with a university post in Ireland in 2003 – I offer this valedictory talk as a review of changing conditions of engagement: reflections on moments of rupture and continuity in a varied life of commitment\, pleasure and “savage indignation”. \nAs for Caravaggio’s luscious painting – the apprehension of the boy\, the lizard’s bite\, the realisation of the glass vase – I have never been able to explain to myself the relation between them.

DESCRIPTION:Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature \nFrom Librarianship to Childhood Studies via Liberal Humanism\, High Theory\, Post-Theory\, Metamodernism and Pooh Corner \nProfessor Peter Hunt (Cardiff University) \nOver the past 50 years\, children’s literature has become a vibrant and important part of university-level studies worldwide. Approaches to it have been as diverse and lively (and problematic) as the subject-matter\, having to deal with multi-media texts\, the responses of non-peer audiences\, fundamental issues of cultural\, historical and literary values and psychological\, educational and political influences. This lecture provides an outline of the fascinating and entertaining directions which the criticism of texts for children has taken.

DESCRIPTION:Dearbhla Glynn \n \nDearbhla Glynn is an award-winning artist\, documentary filmmaker and teacher\, specializing in explorations of conflict and its effect on women and children. Among her films are Gaza: Post Operation Cast Lead (2010) which offered a personal insight into the day-to-day living conditions faced by the Gaza Strip’s 1.5 million conflict-stricken inhabitants. Her 2013 feature film The Value of Women in The Congo documents the issue of rape and conflict in Eastern Congo and explores the experience of the victims as well as the perspective of the perpetrators behind these appalling crimes. Film maker Kirsten Sheridan described the film as “a brave and delicately handled piece of war reportage. It is hard-hitting\, while showing many sides of the story. It avoids sensationalism\, while never shying away from the very difficult themes. It is an important\, devastating piece of human rights documentary filmmaking”. Both films won Grand Prize at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties Human Rights Film Awards. \nIn this session at the Huston School of Film & Digital Media\, Dearbhla will screen her films and discuss her process including the considerable challenges she has faced as a documentary filmmaker. \nSome of Dearbhla’s films can be found here: \nhttps://vimeo.com/dearbhlaglynn

DESCRIPTION:Is a university education still relevant? What are the forces that threaten it? Should academics ever be allowed near Twitter? In Academic Diary (Goldsmiths Press 2016)\, Les Back has chronicled three decades of his academic career\, turning his sharp and often satirical eye to the everyday aspects of life on campus and the larger forces that are reshaping it. In this session he will talk to Kevin Ryan about the writing of this book focusing on its key question – why Higher Education still matters. Commenting on topics that range from the impact of commercialization and fee increases to measurement and auditing research\, the diary offers a critical analysis of higher education today. At the same time\, it is a passionate argument for the life of the mind\, the importance of collaborative thinking\, and the reasons that scholarship and writing are still vital for making sense of our troubled and divided world.   Les will read some excerpts from his diary and have a discussion with Kevin about some of the issues it raises\, while also offering an opportunity for the audience to be part of the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThis website was created by Dr. David Clare as part of his recently-concluded\, IRC-funded postdoctoral research project\, “The Hibernicising of the Anglo-Irish Playwright”. That project was based in the Moore Institute at the National University of Ireland\, Galway. \nwww.ClassicIrishPlays.com provides scholars\, theatre practitioners\, and the general public with invaluable biographical information related to the major Irish playwrights whose work has entered the public domain. It provides links to where the great scripts by these playwrights can be found online\, and it features new digital editions of important plays that have never been previously digitised\, or that are only available in digital form behind “pay walls”. \nThe website will be launched by Prof. Patrick Lonergan\, Director of NUI Galway’s Centre for Drama\, Theatre and Performance\, on Mon.\, 5 December 2016 at 5.30pm in Room G010 of the Moore Institute (located just inside the Hardiman Research Building). At the event\, there will be additional input from Prof. Dan Carey\, Director of the Moore Institute; David Kelly\, the Moore’s Research Technologist; and\, of course\, Dr. Clare himself.

DESCRIPTION:GenderARC study break: play some games that highlight feminist issues! \nWe have several leaders\, so we will be starting new games every 30-60 minutes between 4 and 7; feel free to drop in anytime and another game will start soon. \nKnowledge has a way of sinking into our bodies; we may not even be aware of the way we interpret gender expression and gender roles. \n#Feminism Nano-Games are a series of 30min to 60min games designed to help us explore and discuss the way we internalise and act on our embodied knowledge – and to think about the impact of our actions. \nSome of the #Feminism games give everyone a role and then we play through a scene together. Some ask us to move together according to specific gendered rules\, some ask us to build a woman by committee\, some to guess what emotions people are trying to portray in a selfie.
