SUMMARY:Seminar: 'Theatre and Translation' by MI Visiting Fellow\, Dr. Alinne Fernandes
DESCRIPTION:Theatre and Translation \nDr Alinne Fernandes’ talk will reflect on an ongoing practice-based research project\, which aims to contribute to the dramaturgical study and dissemination of a number of Irish and Northern Irish women’s plays in Brazil. The project is motivated by the relative lack of study and translation of contemporary female voices in Irish and Northern Irish theatre\, such as Patricia Burke Brogan\, Christina Reid\, Geraldine Aron\, Anne Devlin\, and Marina Carr\, to name a few\, and the desire to promote intercultural understanding through performance. Some of these playwrights\, more noticeably Marina Carr\, have enjoyed considerable success in Ireland and abroad\, and yet remain un-translated and thus unknown to the Brazilian Portuguese-speaking world. In this talk\, Dr Fernandez will go through her experiences working as translator and dramaturge on Carr’s By the Bog of Cats…\, Mary Raftery’s No Escape\, and Patricia Burke Brogan’s Eclipsed. \nBio \nDr Alinne Fernandes is a Lecturer at the Department of Modern Languages at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)\, Florianópolis\, Brazil. She completed her PhD in Translation and Dramaturgy at Queen’s University Belfast in 2012\, during which she translated Marina Carr’s play By the Bog of Cats… (1998) as a case study for developing a methodological framework for theatre translation. Her translation\, with an introduction by Marina Carr and notes on her extensive study on the play\, is forthcoming with the São Paulo-based Rafael Copetti Editor (2017\, Coleção Atemporais). She has published articles on theatre translation in international peer-reviewed journals\, such the Journal of Romance Studies (Berghahn Journals)\, Quaderns: Revista de Traducció\, Cadernos de Tradução\, Aletria\, Tradterm\, and Scientia Traductionis. She also has an article forthcoming in Dramaturgias (University of Brasília\, Brazil)\, and a book chapter co-authored with Dr Maria Rita Viana forthcoming in Vidas Irlandesas – O Cinema de Alan Gilsenan em Contexto (2017)\, a collection organised by Dr Beatriz Bastos and Prof José Roberto O’Shea. Besides Carr’s By the Bog of Cats…\, Fernandes has translated and worked as dramaturge on the production of several plays for performance and staged readings\, such as Mary Raftery’s No Escape\, Esteve Soler’s Contra el Progreso\, W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory’s Cathleen ni Houlihan (with Dr Maria Rita Viana)\, and Patricia Burke Brogan’s Eclipsed\, as well as directed several rehearsed readings. She is the Vice-Coordinator of the research cluster on Irish Studies at UFSC\, ad hoc reviewer for the international journal Ilha do Desterro\, and a member of the International Federal for Theatre Research.

Dr Montémont’s presentation takes a twofold approach\, first sketching a brief history of the discipline in France\, before focusing on pertinent projects and initiatives in the fields of literature and linguistics. As ever\, all are welcome. \n  \n12pm | Tuesday 21 February 2017 | Room 1001 Hardiman Research Building (The Bridge) | Facebook event page \n  \nVéronique Montémont (Université de Lorraine) \nDigital Humanities Applied to Literary Studies in France \nThis paper aims to present an overview of what is called Digital Humanities («Humanités numériques») in France. The concept itself designates two distinctive streams\, and therefore covers various issues: the first\, theoretical dimension\, considers digital humanities as a new paradigm able to offer a completely novel way of studying literature\, linguistics or history; the other stream\, more pragmatic\, focuses on the various ways of producing and exploiting data. I will first sketch a brief history of this discipline in France\, through a description of some pioneering projects which appeared around the 70’s. Then\, I will focus on the fields of literature and linguistics\, both disciplines based on the core concept of corpora. Corpora has become so crucial that a large part of projects and initiatives of Digital Humanities now concentrates on it\, neglecting sometimes interpretation and hermeneutics that should remain the ultimate purpose of researchers. The last point I will discuss is the issue of teaching: despite a strong interest among academics\, it remains difficult to offer a cohesive teaching program and even\, in some cases\, to convince students of its relevance. That raises a question: can Digital Humanities be considered and recognized as an intrinsic and promising cross-cutting discipline with its own hermeneutical purposes; or does it simply designate a technical turning point\, a “moment” of knowledge\, intended to reintegrate distinct research fields? \n  \nVéronique Montémont is Maître de conférences HDR (Senior Lecturer) in French language and literature. Within ATILF (Nancy\, France)\, she is the Research Manager for the Frantext database and leader of the ‘Resources\, Normalisation\, Annotation and Exploitation’ research team. She is active within numerous research networks in both Nancy and Paris\, including ANR Difdepo (focussed on OULIPO) and the Institute of Modern Texts and Manuscripts (ITEM-CNRS\, Paris). In 2012\, Mark set up a mobile app development company\, Pocket Anatomy\, to improve meaningful patient education in national and international healthcare systems. Receiving medical treatment is a stressful experience\, and studies have shown that patients retain as little as 14% of the verbal medical information their doctor provides. Pocket Anatomy creates interactive 3D medical anatomy software solutions that provide a visual aid for doctors to explain medical procedures and conditions\, and to record these sessions for later reference. The Pocket Anatomy software has won numerous international awards\, as it combines Mark’s passion for video\, mobile\, healthcare and education.

DESCRIPTION:  \nPaul Webster \n \nPaul Webster is an award winning director from Navan\, Co. Meath. He is a graduate of the MA in Production and Direction at the Huston School of Film & Digital Media (NUIG). Paul was the winner of the Físín Pitching Award at the Dingle International Film Festival 2012 from which his film ‘Stuama’ received its funding. Paul directed the drama which won Best Irish Film at The Cork Underground Film Festival 2013. Paul went on to work in production for Element Pictures and later as script editor and writer on “Fair City”. Let Those Blues In\, Paul’s documentary about Irish Blues musician\, Paddy Smith\, was the winner of Best Short Documentary in association with RTE at The Sky Road Film Festival\, Clifden\, Co. Galway in October 2015 and it was chosen as the closing short film at The Craic Fest Irish Film Festival in New York\, March 2016. Paul received a €35\,000 production fund from Science Foundation Ireland and The Galway Film Centre as part of their Science On Screen documentary scheme. Also in 2016\, Paul co-directed Borderland\, a 26 documentary exploring the refugee crisis along Europe’s Borders which will be screened during this guest session. \n

SUMMARY:Archives in Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Archives service of the James Hardiman Library\, NUI Galway are hosting a half-day seminar on the theme of ‘Archives in Research’. The seminar will feature expert speakers in various academic fields who will showcase new research projects which are based on innovative use of archival collections. The seminar will focus on a range of themes\, including community and publicly-sourced records of the revolutionary period in the West of Ireland which are being digitised and being made publicly available online. Other areas addressed will be an NUI-funded project centred on creating digital access to historic traditional Irish musical scores\, Irish language manuscripts and the research of the context of their collection. \nA keynote paper will be delivered by Professor Frank Shovlin\, Director of Irish Studies\, University of Liverpool. DESCRIPTION:Will Collins \n \nWill Collins is a screenwriter whose credits include the Oscar-nominated SONG OF THE SEA\, the acclaimed follow-up feature to Tomm Moore’s\, The Secret of Kells; Will received an ANNIE AWARD nomination for his ‘Achievement in Writing for an Animated Feature’. Will also wrote\, MY BROTHERS\, his award-winning live-action debut feature which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was the opening film of the Galway Film Fleadh 2010. Will won the Pitching Award at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2007 and was nominated for Best Film Script IFTA\, 2015 & 2011. Will has also written for television. He has lectured in Screenwriting in NUIG and has worked as a Script Editor. Will graduated from the Huston School’s MA in Screenwriting in 2006.

SUMMARY:Huston School of Film and Digital Media Guest Speaker
DESCRIPTION:Leon Butler \n \nLeon Butler has worked across a broad range of positions in the media industry as a visual narrative designer\, filmmaker\, and educator. He graduated from Huston’s MA in Digital Media in 2009 and his final project animated film\, Ghosts Before Dawn (2009)\, won the Gold Medal at the National Digital Media Awards. Since setting up his practice in 2010\, he has worked with high-profile clients including the Galway International Arts Festival\, who commissioned him to produce the iconic Festival Poster in 2011. He has also worked with clients as diverse as Starbucks on their global holiday campaign\, Druid Theatre on a promotional film for their iconic productions\, and musician Macklemore\, who commissioned Leon to document his 2014 visit to Dublin’s O2 for two sold out shows. He has also developed many personal projects in animation\, typography\, children’s illustration and documentary. His research interest areas include adaptive interactions and experiences using available data in the public sphere and generative typography and in 2015 he completed a residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York in this field. In 2016\, Leon received a ‘Certificate of Typographic Excellence’ from the Type Directors Club in New York. The Design and Craft Council of Ireland listed Leon as one of their ‘Future Makers’ for 2016. Leon has recently completed a 12-week residency in Los Angeles with digital agency 72andSunny in their 72u program. In September 2016 he was appointed as a design innovation research fellow on the Techinnovate program at NUI Galway for 2016-17.

Oil on Canvas\, 66 x 49.5 cm. \nAn undergraduate in university in England during the 1970s\, returning to tertiary education after work in the television and film industries with a university post in Ireland in 2003 – I offer this valedictory talk as a review of changing conditions of engagement: reflections on moments of rupture and continuity in a varied life of commitment\, pleasure and “savage indignation”. \nAs for Caravaggio’s luscious painting – the apprehension of the boy\, the lizard’s bite\, the realisation of the glass vase – I have never been able to explain to myself the relation between them.
