SUMMARY:Josie Dixon (Publishing Consultant)\, Publishing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Josie Dixon (Publishing Consultant)\, Publishing Workshop (details for advance registration and participation will be posted shortly) \n9.30-11.00 \nPublic lecture and discussion \n‘Academic Publishing in the 21st Century: Markets and Technology\, Survival and Change’ \nDebates about the future of scholarly publishing are not a new phenomenon\, and the research monograph in the humanities and social sciences has long been a focus of particular concern. Yet the sense of crisis has sharpened in recent years\, and changes in the market and in technology have resulted in some fundamental shifts in academic publishers’ business. Digital media offer new opportunities\, but have arguably introduced at least as many problems as they have solved. The most fundamental issues for the sustainability of scholarly publishing relate to the larger workings of the academic economy – involving not just publishers but funding bodies\, research assessors and tenure committees\, libraries\, and all the wholesale and retail links in the international distribution chain between publisher and reader. As part of that broader picture\, we need to understand the varying pressures of supply and demand\, together with recent changes in the economy of print publishing and developments in electronic publishing. In this wide-ranging lecture\, based on 15 years’ publishing experience in both university-press and commercial-academic sectors\, Josie Dixon reviews the state of the market and the strategies scholarly publishers have developed to ensure the survival of their business. She outlines some of the new challenges brought by digital technology\, including some fundamental questions relating to copyright\, access\, and intellectual property. While these issues are being played out most dramatically in the sciences\, it is clear that they are already encroaching on humanities and social science publishing\, and likely to have a major impact in the coming years. \nThe following for workshop participants only: \n11.00 Coffee \n11.30-1.15 Workshop part 1 \n1.15-1.45 Lunch \n1.45-3.30 Workshop part 2

SUMMARY:Ibsen and Chekhov on the Irish Stage
DESCRIPTION:This is advance notice of a conference to be held at the National University of Ireland\, Galway from 6-7 November 2009 on the reception in Ireland of the plays of Henrik Ibsen and Anton Chekhov. Its aim is to contextualise contemporary adaptations and translations of works by Ibsen and Chekhov within the history of Irish drama. The immediate context for this conference is the work of Tom Kilroy\, Frank McGuinness\, and Brian Friel. In adapting the plays of Ibsen and Chekhov for the Irish stage\, these leading contemporary dramatists engage audience in their literary relationships with these classic authors. Their adaptations pose questions on the cultural relevance of the plays of Ibsen and Chekhov\, their historical impact on the Irish dramatic tradition\, and their influence on the development of Irish theatre. This conference aims to explore these questions by bringing together major playwrights\, practitioners\, and leading theatre scholars. The conference covers the period from 1899 to the present day and will be in two parts. The first will feature papers on the reception of Ibsen and Chekhov and the second those dealing with contemporary Irish approaches to their works. We will also host presentations by playwrights and directors followed by a round table discussion of their work on Ibsen and Chekhov. The conference in investigating the cross currents between native tradition and international influence\, and between literary influence and public reception\, will it is hoped\, shed new light on the history of Irish dramatic writing.Further information and details of the provisional programme may be obtained from the organisers Dr. Ros Dixon and Dr. Irina Ruppo Malone at ruppodixon@gmail.com or by calling 353 91 493974.
