SUMMARY:Human Rights Lunchtime Seminar Series: LGBTI rights in Uganda - the state of human rights defenders in peril by Sandra Namutebi\, human rights defender from Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Seminar Series:\nLGBTI rights in Uganda – the state of human rights defenders in perilby Sandra Namutebi\, human rights defender from Uganda\nThe Irish Centre for Human Rights\, in cooperation with Front Line Defenders\, is pleased to welcome Sandra Namutebi\, a human rights defender for the LGBTI community in Uganda. \nIn February 2014\, Ugandan President Museveni signed a law outlawing homosexual acts which was then annulled in August 2014 due to a technical issue. Although this law no longer stands\, it reflects the widespread prejudice against the LGBTI community in Uganda; it is within this climate that Sandra works. The organisation she works with\, the National LGBTI Security Committee\, is a safety and protection body in Uganda that deals with emergencies of sexual minorities. They provide a hotline service for LGBTI community members and track and monitor abuses motivated by prejudice against the community. The political and social climate for human rights defenders\, particularly for those working for LGBTI rights\, is dangerous\, with hostility from both the government and society. Although fearful of the dangers and prejudices she faces daily\, Sandra continues her work and recognizes its importance in this increasingly difficult environment. \nSandra’s talk will touch upon a short history of Ugandan politics and society\, the general situation for human rights defenders in Uganda and the situation for LGBTI rights defenders in Uganda. Finally\, she will talk about her personal story\, as how governmental and societal issues affect her life and work. \nAll are welcome! \nFor more information please contact t.ananthavinayagan1@nuigalway.ie

SUMMARY:Dr BrÌ_d McGrath - Managing the Windsor of Ireland: Galway's Town Council From 1603-1653
DESCRIPTION:Dr BrÌ_d McGrath \nManaging the Windsor of Ireland: Galway’s Town Council From 1603-1653 \nMonday\, 9 November at 8pm \nHarbour Hotel\, Dock Road\, Galway \nDr. McGrath’s talk explores one of Galway’s most outstanding treasures\, the ‰Û÷Liber A’ manuscript\, preserved in the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway \nThe lecture\, sponsored by the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society\, is based on Dr. McGrath’s research as a Moore Institute Visiting Fellow. \nIn this public talk\, Dr. McGrath will describe the membership of Galway’s town council and the people who controlled and managed the city in the first half of the 17th century. She will also discuss recently discovered letters from the famous Galway lawyer\, Patrick Darcy now held in the Huntington Library\, California. \nAccording to Dr. McGrath\, “Galway’s ‰Û÷Liber A’ is a truly unique manuscript and one of the town’s most precious treasures. While working on it\, I was able to discover how Galway was managed by its wealthy\, cultivated merchant elite in this period and the key role played by Galway men in Irish political life\, in parliament and the Confederation of Kilkenny.” \n‰Û÷Liber A’ is available online and features beautiful pen and ink drawings at: http://archives.library.nuigalway.ie/LiberA/html/LiberA.html
