DESCRIPTION:‘Si me permiten hablar…’: Performative Testimony in Bolivia Today \nDr Rebecca Breen \nThis talk examines performance art by contemporary women artists from Latin America; it aims to conceptualize and recontextualize the notion of testimonio in relation to visual practice. The paper revisits women‰۪s testimonial narrative writing (or testimonio)\,which emerged in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s — specifically\, Domitila Barrios de Chungara’s ‘”Si me permiten hablar…”: testimonio de Domitila\, una mujer de las minas de Bolivia’ (1978). This genre comprised themes of the subaltern\, authorship/agency\, and the relationship of personal to collective testimonies. However\, the paper focuses on the performative practice of a contemporary artist from Bolivia\, Aruma (Sandra deBerduccy)\, so as to provide a purchase for negotiating testimonio from the point of view of the visual and\, particularly\, to highlight testimonio‘s gender concerns even to today.
