SUMMARY:Ibsen and Chekhov on the Irish Stage
DESCRIPTION:This is advance notice of a conference to be held at the National University of Ireland\, Galway from 6-7 November 2009 on the reception in Ireland of the plays of Henrik Ibsen and Anton Chekhov. Its aim is to contextualise contemporary adaptations and translations of works by Ibsen and Chekhov within the history of Irish drama. The immediate context for this conference is the work of Tom Kilroy\, Frank McGuinness\, and Brian Friel. In adapting the plays of Ibsen and Chekhov for the Irish stage\, these leading contemporary dramatists engage audience in their literary relationships with these classic authors. Their adaptations pose questions on the cultural relevance of the plays of Ibsen and Chekhov\, their historical impact on the Irish dramatic tradition\, and their influence on the development of Irish theatre. This conference aims to explore these questions by bringing together major playwrights\, practitioners\, and leading theatre scholars.The conference covers the period from 1899 to the present day and will be in two parts. The first will feature papers on the reception of Ibsen and Chekhov and the second those dealing with contemporary Irish approaches to their works. We will also host presentations by playwrights and directors followed by a round table discussion of their work on Ibsen and Chekhov.
